Driving in B.C. This Fall? Winter Tires Will Be Mandatory by Oct. 1
October 09 2025,

The start of October means more than just cooler mornings. Across B.C., it marks the beginning of winter tire season. From Oct. 1 until April 30, many of the province’s highways require winter tires. On routes without mountain passes or significant snowfall, the rule ends earlier on March 31.
Where the Rules Apply
Drivers heading into the North, the Interior, and parts of the South Coast, including the Sea to Sky, will need the right tires in place. On Vancouver Island, sections like the Malahat, Highway 4, Highway 14 and Highway 28 are included. While the Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are not under the mandatory list, weather can change quickly, making preparedness a smart move.
Approved Tire Requirements
Winter tires in B.C. must have either the M+S marking, which stands for mud and snow, or the mountain and snowflake symbol. The tread depth must measure at least 3.5 millimetres. Failing to meet these requirements can result in a $121 fine, a penalty easily avoided with proper tires.
Chains and Commercial Vehicles
Commercial vehicles face additional rules. Starting Oct. 1, most are required to carry chains when travelling in designated areas. Roadside signs indicate when chains are necessary. Chains are not required on the Lower Mainland or most of Vancouver Island, but elsewhere they help keep roads safe during winter storms.
